If feeding an Ostrich is one of the great goals in your life, then this is the place for you.
Located in the Central Valley, right near the Danish town of Solvang, Ostrichland USA is 33 acres of Ostrich (and emu!!) glory. It's a treasure trove of excitement for Ostrich aficionados, offering the unique opportunity to gawk, stare and get up close and personal with these 9 foot tall feathery behemoths. Fun for the whole family, but a little on the smelly side.
While marveling at an ostrich all day might be good enough to some, people flock from all parts for the real main attraction: the FEEDING of the birds, which you can do yourself for a measly $.25 pop. Feed, you say? That's right, it's time to get really hang with these guys, and they're hungry, a little dangerous, and quite violent if you screw around.
Pellets in hand, you learn pretty quickly that one bowl of food doesn't last long with these hulking creatures. Walk up and dudes are pecking all over, slamming the food and not giving a shit about your well being. Your whole life will flash before your eyes.
Like a demanding boss at work, these beasts are aggressive and rabid, and seem to never be satisfied with anything you bring their way. Seriously, hold those cups tightly, cuz things are gonna get a little crazy.
Once you're done being nearly pecked to death by these 300 pound savages, go check out the gift shop for some unique swag. Some highlights include: Ostrich meat (claimed to NOT come from any of the ostrich out back), eggs (which are so large that they could feed a village), books, stuffed animals, ostrich jerky and emu oil. This place has all of the essentials one would need if the apocalypse ever hit.
Like anything near Los Angeles, these ostriches have some Hollywood credibility to their names, as well. They were featured in the movie Sideways, and served as the inspiration for an episode of the Simpsons.
