THE ABANDONED L.A. ZOO: Party with the Ghosts of Dead Animals

Griffith Park Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90027

Located in the Northeast corner of Griffith Park, the spooky old LA Zoo (which closed in 1966) is a great place to become one with the animals, while hanging out in their former crash pads.

Once a lively and kid friendly wonderland, this place now has creep written all over it. Decrepit cages, man-made caves and rusty cages welcome brave hikers to an area that looks like a cross between somewhere a death cult would hold their weekly meetings, and a place fit for a Scooby Doo villain to hide out in.

And as expected, there's also graffiti; a shitload of colorful graffiti, presumably not done by animals.

You can swing from monkey bars, echo your voice in the old tiger huts and play "guess which animal probably died here?" as you jump around from one abandoned cage to another. Fun times!

There are also tables at the base, so I say picnic here and soak up the evil vibes. However, keep that meal vegetarian, as you never know what animal ghosts still walk the area.

HOW THE HELL DID THIS HAPPEN?

For five decades, the old LA zoo stood loud and proud inside Griffith Park.

Founded in 1915 to much fanfare, the zoo was an unfortunate barrel of controversy from the start. One year after its grand opening, the Health department nearly shut it down due to a sewage break. If that wasn't unsanitary enough, World War I left a meat shortage that killed off many of the zoo's star animals.

A renovation in the 1930s restored faith in the once run down animal sanctuary, but the good times didn't last. By the 50s, people began talking about a relocation, which became a reality in 1966.

A new zoo area was chosen at a nearby golf course, and the area has been abandoned ever since.
